The Role of EECP in Coronary Artery Disease

Treatment Approach for Coronary Artery Disease

CAD treatment typically includes medication, lifestyle changes, and, when needed, interventional methods such as angioplasty/stent placement or bypass surgery. However, in some patients the vascular structure may not be suitable for these procedures, or symptoms may return after interventional treatment.

Where Does EECP Come In?

EECP is a non-invasive option considered for patients with coronary artery disease, particularly those who are not candidates for angioplasty or bypass, or whose symptoms persist after these procedures. The treatment aims to support coronary circulation and reduce the heart's workload through synchronized pressure applied to the legs.

EECP in Non-Obstructive CAD (INOCA)

In patients whose coronary angiography does not show significant blockage but who continue to have angina symptoms (non-obstructive coronary artery disease / INOCA), symptom management may require a different approach. EECP is among the options considered for this patient group as well.

Scientific Basis

The effectiveness of EECP in coronary artery disease has been studied in numerous studies, including the MUST-EECP trial and the IEPR patient registry. ACC/AHA guidelines classify EECP as a Class IIb recommendation (Level of Evidence B) for appropriate patient groups.
