Frequently Asked Questions

We've compiled the most frequently asked questions about EECP treatment — before, during, and after.

TREATMENT PROCESS

Treatment Process

Is EECP treatment painful?

Most patients describe a rhythmic pressure sensation in their legs during the session; the treatment is generally not considered painful. Cuff inflation pressure is adjusted to each individual, and patients can rest comfortably throughout the session.

How many sessions are needed, and how often are they given?

The standard EECP protocol is typically 35 sessions, given 5 days a week for about 1 hour a day, completing the full course in roughly 7 weeks. The exact number of sessions may vary based on your physician's assessment.

How long do the effects of EECP last?

Long-term studies show that as collateral blood vessels mature, clinical benefits can continue for a period of time after treatment ends. How long they last varies from person to person, depending on lifestyle and the underlying heart condition.

When will I start to feel results?

Many patients report a noticeable improvement in chest pain and exercise capacity after completing the first half of the treatment protocol; the full benefit typically appears once all sessions are complete.

What can I do during treatment?

You remain lying down on the treatment table throughout the session; during this time you can rest, sleep, read, or use your phone. Most patients find it easy to fit a session into their daily routine.

SUITABILITY & SAFETY

Suitability and Safety

Can I have EECP if I've already had a stent or bypass surgery?

Yes. EECP can be safely used in patients who have already had a stent or bypass surgery, and it is particularly considered for patients whose symptoms persist despite existing treatment. Final suitability is determined through a physician examination.

Does EECP have any side effects?

EECP is considered a non-surgical, low-risk treatment. Some patients may experience mild skin irritation or temporary tenderness in the legs after a session; serious side effects are rare.

Who should not undergo EECP?

EECP is not recommended for certain conditions, such as severe heart valve disease, uncontrolled arrhythmia, severe hypertension, active blood clots/thrombosis, or severe leg vascular disease. Final assessment is made through a cardiology examination.

Insurance coverage can vary by country and policy. Please contact our clinic for up-to-date information about your specific situation.

What exactly is EECP (Counterpulsation), and how does it work?

EECP is a non-invasive heart treatment method that works by inflating and deflating special cuffs wrapped around the legs, synchronized with the ECG. During the heart's relaxation phase (diastole), the cuffs inflate in sequence from the lower legs upward, pushing blood flow toward the heart. This increases blood flow to the coronary arteries and, over time, contributes to the development of new small blood vessels (collateral circulation).

Who is EECP treatment suitable for?

EECP may be considered for conditions such as chronic stable angina (chest pain), coronary artery disease, and heart failure — particularly for patients for whom surgical or interventional treatment options are limited or risky. Suitability is determined on a case-by-case basis following a physician examination and diagnostic tests.

How long does a session take?

A standard EECP session typically lasts 60 minutes. The treatment program is usually scheduled 5 days a week, for a total of around 35 hours.

What is the difference between EECP and surgery/stenting?

EECP is a non-invasive method that requires no incisions or anesthesia. It is not considered an alternative to interventional treatments such as bypass surgery or stenting, but rather a complementary option in many cases; your doctor will decide which treatment is appropriate for you.

Is EECP a safe, approved treatment method?

EECP is an FDA-approved treatment method that has been used in clinical practice in many countries around the world for years. It is administered under the supervision of trained healthcare staff and under a doctor's control.

Can I return to my daily life immediately after treatment?

Yes. EECP is administered as an outpatient (same-day) treatment. You can drive and continue your daily activities right after a session; it requires no anesthesia or recovery period.

Are EECP results permanent, and will I need repeat treatment?

While the effects of treatment vary from person to person, many patients experience long-lasting benefits. Depending on lifestyle, the course of the underlying condition, and your doctor's recommendations, occasional repeat (booster) sessions may be advised.

What happens at the first examination?

During the initial assessment, your medical history is reviewed, your existing test results (such as angiography, ECG, or echocardiography, if available) are evaluated, and additional tests may be requested if needed. Once your suitability is confirmed, a personalized treatment plan is created for you.

How does the process work for patients coming from outside Cyprus?

For our patients traveling to Northern Cyprus, we offer guidance and support with appointment planning, as well as accommodation and transfer arrangements throughout the course of treatment. You can reach us through our Contact page for detailed information.

Is any pain medication or sedation used during EECP?

No. EECP treatment does not require anesthesia, sedation, or pain medication. Patients remain fully conscious and comfortable throughout the session, and may read or rest if they wish.

What happens if I stop the treatment program partway through?

Completing the full session program is recommended for the best results. If the program is interrupted partway through, some of the expected benefit may still be seen, but your doctor will assess your situation and provide a personalized recommendation.

What documents should I bring for EECP treatment?

Bringing any recent angiography, ECG, or echocardiography results, along with a list of your current medications, will speed up the evaluation process. If you don't have these documents, our clinic can arrange the necessary tests for you.

Up to what age can EECP treatment be applied?

Suitability for EECP depends more on general health and the condition of the cardiovascular system than on age alone. It can also be administered to older patients following a physician's assessment.

How far in advance should I apply for an appointment?

We recommend contacting us as early as possible for assessment and treatment planning. Depending on appointment availability, the evaluation process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
