EECP (Enhanced External Counterpulsation) is an FDA-approved, surgery-free and incision-free treatment for patients with coronary artery disease and chest pain (angina). On this page, we take a detailed look at what EECP is, how it works, and its scientific foundations.
EECP, known in Turkish as Enhanced External Counterpulsation, is a treatment method backed by decades of clinical research, designed to increase blood flow to the heart muscle in people with coronary artery disease — without surgery, incisions, or anesthesia. During treatment, special pneumatic cuffs wrapped around the legs (calves, thighs, and hips) inflate and deflate in sync with the patient's ECG rhythm.
This rhythmic, controlled pressure increases blood flow to the coronary arteries when the heart relaxes (diastole), and reduces the workload on the heart when it contracts (systole). As a result, the heart pumps more blood with less effort, and over time the body develops new small blood vessels around blocked or narrowed arteries. This natural process is referred to in the literature as "the natural bypass effect" or collateral circulation.
EECP offers a safe, evidence-based alternative for patients at high surgical risk, those whose symptoms persist after coronary bypass or angioplasty, those who continue to experience chest pain despite medication, or those who are not suitable candidates for surgery. At EECP Cyprus, this treatment is administered under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr. Osman Beton, using equipment that meets international standards.
The treatment works through four complementary physiological mechanisms:
EECP is the product of decades of research into heart failure and coronary artery disease. The method has been reviewed by relevant health authorities for use in the treatment of chronic stable angina (chest pain) and has become a guideline-recognized treatment option used in thousands of cardiology centers worldwide.
To date, more than 350,000 patients in more than 40 countries have received EECP treatment. Clinical observations report that a significant proportion of patients who complete treatment experience a reduction in the frequency of chest pain, an increase in exercise capacity, and a marked improvement in quality of life. At EECP Cyprus, we conduct our patients' treatment in line with internationally recognized protocols, drawing on Prof. Dr. Osman Beton's more than 20 years of clinical experience.

Your suitability for EECP treatment is determined by evaluating your current heart condition, previous treatments, and general health status. Always consult a cardiology specialist for a definitive assessment.
EECP is a treatment method that has been studied in the international cardiology literature for years and is supported by clinical registry studies. Some findings reported in international patient registries are as follows:
Reported reduction in chest pain frequency in international patient registries
Range of reported duration of benefit, in years (varies by individual)
Sessions in the standard treatment program (over 7 weeks)
Need for anesthesia, incisions, or recovery time
*The rates shown are compiled from international clinical registry studies; individual results may vary based on the patient's overall health. A physician evaluation is required prior to treatment.
| Feature | EECP | Bypass Surgery | Angioplasty / Stent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surgical Intervention | None — applied externally | Open-heart surgery | Catheter-based interventional procedure |
| Anesthesia | Not required | General anesthesia | Local anesthesia / sedation |
| Hospital Stay | Not required, outpatient | 7-10 days | 1-2 days |
| Recovery Time | None, immediate return to daily life | 6-12 weeks | A few days |
| Treatment Duration | 35 sessions / approximately 7 weeks | One-time procedure | One-time procedure |
| Repeatability | Can be repeated if needed | Limited | Limited |
This comparison is for general informational purposes; you should decide which treatment method is right for you together with your cardiology specialist. In some patients, EECP may be considered a complementary or alternative option to surgical treatments.
This list is not exhaustive. A definitive suitability assessment can only be made after a comprehensive examination.
Most patients find the treatment comfortable. The inflation and deflation of the cuffs may create a squeezing sensation in the legs, but this is generally not painful. There may be a mild adjustment period during the first few sessions.
A standard session takes approximately 60 minutes. The full treatment program is typically planned for 5 days a week, for a total of 35 sessions over about 7 weeks.
EECP is generally considered a safe treatment. Some patients may experience mild redness or a feeling of fatigue in the legs during the first days of treatment; these symptoms usually resolve on their own within a short time.
Some patients begin to notice a reduction in chest pain around the midpoint of treatment; the most significant improvement is generally assessed after the treatment is completed. Results can vary from person to person.
No. EECP does not replace the medication prescribed by your doctor; it is generally applied as an addition to your existing treatment. You should not stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor.
