Before starting treatment, a cardiologist evaluates your current heart condition, the medications you take, and your past treatments (such as stent or bypass procedures, if any). This evaluation is used to determine whether EECP is suitable for you and to identify any factors that require special attention.
The standard EECP protocol consists of a total of 35 sessions, 5 days a week, with sessions of about 1 hour each day, lasting approximately 7 weeks. In some patients, this duration can be shortened with two sessions per day if appropriate. The session schedule is determined together with the cardiology team based on the patient's schedule and clinical condition.
In the first session, ECG electrodes are first placed on your chest, and a sensor is attached to your finger to monitor oxygen levels and pulse. Cuffs are then wrapped around your calves, thighs, and hips and connected to the device. The cuffs inflate and deflate in sync with your heart rhythm; during this time, you can rest lying down, read, or listen to music.
As the sessions progress, the cardiology team evaluates your symptoms (such as frequency of chest pain and exercise capacity) at regular intervals. Sharing any discomfort you experience during treatment with the team allows the pressure settings to be optimized for you.
When the 35 sessions are complete, the cardiology team conducts an overall evaluation.
EECP is an outpatient treatment; it does not require hospitalization. After a session, you can drive yourself home and continue with most of your daily activities. This makes EECP a practical option, particularly for patients who are not suitable candidates for surgery or who do not want to take time off from work or family life.
